Jazz highlights of the week: March 26, 2013

Denton Jazz – live and recorded will warm up the cold Spring week with new, creative and exciting ways. Some highlights below, segue to the Week ahead in Live Denton Jazz. Hold on to your hats, and fasten your seatbelts! Here we go!

  • From David Pierce
    Tonight at 8 p.m.
    One of the world’s top trombonists, Joe Alessi of the New York Philharmonic, will perform at 8 p.m., at the Meyerson Symphony Orchestra Center, 2301 Flora St, Dallas. I am honored to have one of my arrangements selected as the finale : “76 Trombones.”
    Originally commissioned for 2 marching bands, the concert setting of this arrangement will indeed feature over 76 trombones! Tickets available at : www.dws.org
  • Saxophonist Shelley Carrol will celebrate the Shelley Carrol and Friends ( Lyles West on bass and Andrew Griffith on drums) CD release at the Dallas Museum of Art, 1717 N. Harwood St., Dallas, Thursday, March 28, at 6 p.m. w/ Ardina Lockhart Colby and Roger Boykin.
  • From Drew Phelps
    Sunday, March 31, I’ll be at Sweetwater Grill & Tavern, 115 S. Elm St., Denton, with my new Electric Guitar Band, 7 p.m. down

    beat. Paul Metzger and Don Bell on electric guitars, Steve Barns on drums and myself doing the bass duties. No cover. We will play “Easter Parade,” I promise.

  • Caravan of Thieves performs at Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial, Denton, at 8 p.m. – $7 – This band from Connecticut, is recommended by Squire Jeffrey Barnes. Following at 10 p.m., Paul Slavens & Friends – FREE

  • Lauren Pierce and Emily Yates (double bass and piano) at Banter Bistro, 219 W. Oak, Denton, at 6 p.m., followed by The Lightning Crispies at 8 p.m., and The Deadpan Poets at 10 p.m. – ALL FREE

Sunday, March 31: 

  • A Taste of Herb (TJB tribute) at Gerhard’s German Restaurant, 222 W. Hickory St., Denton, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm – no cover
  • Drew Phelps Group at Sweetwater Grill & Tavern, 115 S. Elm St. Denton, 7-9 p.m. FREE
  • Stefan Karlsson & Addison Frei (jazz pianists) perform in the UNT Recital Hall at 3:30 p.m. – FREE

Monday, April 1:

  • Late night Jazz at the Greenhouse Restaurant, 600 N. Locust, Denton, 10p.m.- Midnight.
