Toy Hearts @ Sweetwater, Sunday

June 14, 2013

Sunday, June 16 (Father’s Day):ToyHearts UK westernswing

The Toy HeartsStewart Johnson with his daughters Sophia and Hannah, bring their fresh take on Bluegrass and Western Swing to the patio stage at Sweetwater Grill & Tavern, 115 S. Elm St., Denton, 7-9 p.m.

Their music is a mixture of bluegrass and western swing with a dash of continental jazzThe Toy Hearts aren’t mimicking American roots music; they are genuinely innovating and developing the genre from a British perspective.

After ten years of gigging across the UK, Europe and the USA, in May 2013, the core trio of this band: Hannah, (Vocals/mandolin) Sophia, (Guitar/vocals) and their Father Stewart, (Banjo/Dobro/Steel) are relocating from their home in Birmingham UK to their musical Mecca – Austin, Texas – for the whole summer …

The Toy Hearts have been making music together since 2000, and between 2006 -2012, they recorded and released 4 albums on their own label Wood Ville Music, their third Femme Fatale was recorded in Nashville and their fourth Whiskey, was edited, mixed and mastered there. They have already made several trips to the USA to record and tour, but this is the first time they are able to stay for an extended period.

They are proving the old adage about how you get to the Grand Old Opry? Practice! The years of honing their craft on the road has given them an enviable reputation as great singers, songwriters and instrumentalists, whom always deliver on a live show. Their tour schedule is always robust including gigs across the UK and Europe, with an annual winter tour of Germany/Switzerland/Austria.

In the UK, they have opened for diverse artists such as Robert Plant, Imelda May, Chris Thile, Ricky Skaggs, Tim O’Brien, The Hot Club of Cowtown, The Quebe Sisters, Kitty Daisy & Lewis, Gene Watson, and Peter Rowan. They can also count The Rolling Stones’ Ronnie Wood and veteran BBC broadcaster Bob Harris in their fans.

The Toy Hearts aren’t from Texas, but they got there as soon as they could!
