Friday, July 19:

Lisa Markley

Lisa Markley

Dallas singer-songwriter Lisa Markley and a line-up of some of North Texas’ finest jazz musicians will perform and record an evening of jazz standards and original music at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 19, at Uncle Calvin’s Coffeehouse, 9555 N. Central Expressway (2 blocks south of Park Lane southbound side) Dallas.
Tickets can be purchased and advance reservations made online at http://www.unclecalvins.org

Markley, a national touring artist, Soona Songs recording artist, passionately devoted music educator, and a longtime folk and jazz staple of the local music scene, will live record an evening of the songs of Johnny Mercer/Lionel Hampton, Lenny Tristano, Thelonious Monk, Carl Sandburg, Lennon/McCartney, as well as her own original tunes and a co-write with fellow performer, William Foley.

The recording will form the basis of her next album, the fourth on the Soona Songs for Markley, who has accolades from music fans and critics alike for her unique blend of jazz, folk and classical music that defies genres. “Markley has more depth, control, and beauty to her voice in a live concert setting than most singers get in the studio,” KXT’s Paul Slavens stated recently. “Driving that voice is a soul of wit and intelligence, and a heart of gold.”

The live recording concert will feature a group of Markley’s fellow musicians and friends well known to local jazz aficionados, including accomplished singer-songwriter and guitarist Balmer; William Foley on keys; Buddy Mohmed on bass, Shelley Carrol and Drew Zaremba on woodwinds; Chris McGuire on woodwinds and trumpet; Andrew Griffith on drums; and UNT director of Jazz Studies and directs the One O’Clock Lab Band Steve Wiest, with Dillon Garrett, and Joakim Tovtgard on trombones.

About Uncle Calvin’s Coffeehouse

Uncle Calvin’s Coffeehouse is a not-for-profit, volunteer-run live music venue, presenting concerts nearly every Friday night in the fellowship hall of Northpark Presbyterian Church in Dallas, TX. Our goal is to bring you the best possible environment for listening to music, with clear, pristine sound, free of smoke, alcohol, and conversation.Uncle Calvin's logo

Musically, you would find us in the acoustically-based categories of singer/songwriter, folk, Americana, roots, blues, bluegrass, world, and the like. You’ll hear primarily original music, songs written by the performers, with just an occasional tune here and there that you might recognize. Until you come around a few times, you might not be familiar with many of the performers, but rest assured that they are among the best in the country (and the world) at what they do.

We are known throughout the US, Canada, and beyond as one of the best venues of our kind out there, so we are able to attract the best of the best to come play for us. We travel to festivals and conferences all over the country, such as the Kerrville Folk Festival and Folk Alliance International, constantly on the lookout for the best new artists to bring you.

We’re grateful for this opportunity to bring you such great music, and hope you’ll do us the honor and come listen to it.
