Don’t stray too far today, or you’ll miss fabulous Live Jazz opportunities, throughout Sept. 11-17.

Monday, September 9

  • 7 p.m. – University of North Texas Jazz student Stuart Mack, recently selected as one of five finalists for the Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Competition, will perform his competition program in Kenton Hall. The performance is open to the public.

The Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Competition takes place at the Cincinnati Conservatory on September 13 and 14, 2013.

  • Then from 10 p.m.-12 a.m., the Pete Weise Quintet plays “the double drum extravaganza, ” at GreenHouse Restaurant Denton, 600 N. Locust. “In addition to the tried and true free improvisation, we’ll be playing some compositions by Clark, Jacob and myself,” wrote Pete via Facebook.

Pete Weise Quintet members: Pete Weise – guitar, Clark Erickson – keys, Jacob Smith – bass, Zach Forsyth – drums, and Matt Young – drums.

Tuesday, September 10:

  • 5 p.m. – A Taste of Herb: The Sounds of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial, Denton. Free.
  • The Sweetwater Jazz Quartet Jim Riggs, sax; Neil Slater, keys; Ron Fink, drums; and Lou Carfa, bass, play the patio stage at Sweetwater Grill & Tavern, 115 S. Elm St., Denton, 7-9 p.m. Enjoy great eats, cool beverages and FREE outstanding Jazz.

  • 9 p.m. – Five O’Clock Lab Band, directed by Alex Fraile, followed by the Two O’Clock Lab Band, directed by Jay Saunders, at Gateway Center on the University of North Texas Campus. – $/?

Thursday, September 12:

  • 7-9 p.m. – Special Night @ Sweetwater Grill & Tavern, 115 S. Elm St., UNT Marichi Aguilas plays the patio stage.

  • 7:30-9:30 p.m. – The Dallas Jazz Piano Society presents William Foley, Music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, at the Sammons Center for the Arts, 3630 Harry Hines Blvd, Dallas.
  • 6 p.m. – Carolyn Curry – Jazz opens the night at Banter Bistro, 219 W. Oak St., Denton, followed by Open Mic Night at 8 p.m. Open Mic sign-up starts at 7:45 p.m.

Friday, September 13:

  • 7-9 p.m. Ron and the Finklesteiners play their Bavarian Country Music, Gerhard’s German Restaurant, 222 W. Hickory St., Denton.

Saturday, September 14:

  • 5 p.m. – Chris Watson Band merges Blues, Funk and “little bits of everything,” for a unique take on guitar-driven Texas music, Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial, Denton. FREE.
