Spring 2014 offers many changes to Denton’s Live Jazz landscape. We have, for the short term, lost a significant live music venue, as Karen and

Closed for a couple of weeks, as new owners ready for the reopening.

Jimmy Meredith have retired, selling their major music, eating and meeting spot – Sweetwater Grill & Tavern. (Karen wrote on Facebook, that the new owners will close Sweetwater for a couple of weeks to fix it up a bit, then reopen.)

But fear not, dear Readers, Jazz music remains a strong force in Denton, as other venues pick up the tempo.

Wednesday, March 19:

  • Jeffry Eckels presents “Jazz at the White House,” the corner of Scripture and Bryan, Denton. 8-10:30 p.m.Jeff Eckels Jazz at Whitehouse
    Special guest this week will be Ginny Mac, with Johnny Harmon, Drums; Collin Campbell, Piano; Jeffry Eckels: Bass
    Never a cover, the finest atmosphere in the area to listen to live music, and food and beverages to fit every palette. Don’t miss it!
  • Bone Doggie’s Open Mic at II Charlies, 809 Sunset. 8:30 p.m. sign-up, Open Mic 9 p.m.-1:30 a.m.BoneDoggiesOpenMicN
  • West End, Third Street, Avenue C & UNT Jazz Singers, Super 400 & L5 perform in the Gateway Center at 9 p.m. – $/?

  • Woody’s Rampage, Mulberry Street Cantina, 110 Mulberry Street, Denton. 9-11 p.m. DentonRadio.com has just partnered with Mulberry Street Cantina! Every Wednesday we will be bringing live music to MSC and we wanted to start this one off RIGHT! So, we are bringing Woody’s Rampage from 9 – 11p.m! NO COVER (Woody’s Rampage for FREE??? Ooooh yeah!!!), great drinks, this is going to be a fantastic time!!

Thursday, March 20:

  • Joe Tucker at Banter Bistro, 219 West Oak St., at 6 p.m., followed by Open Mic at 8 p.m. – BOTH FREE
  • Angela Berens Brass Quintet at UNT on the Square, 109 N Elm St, at 7 p.m., followed by John Sturino (Jazz small group) at 8 p.m. – FREE
  • The Dallas Jazz Piano Society presents An Evening of Latin JazzSteinway Hall Plano, 5813 Preston Rd. Suite 570, Plano – 7:30 p.m.JoseAponteCaribe
    Featuring: Jose Aponte and Caribe ClubTito Charneco/Tenor sax, Carlos Rengifo/Bass, Christian Valdes/Piano, and Daniel Gallard/Percussion    Admission – $20
  • Naked Lunch (A Steely Dan Tribute Band) takes it outside under the stars at Lee Harvey’s, 1807 Gould St, Dallas. Show starts at 9:30 p.m., and will include two full sets of Steely Dan classics and deep cuts. The kitchen is open until midnight and admission is FREE!

Saturday, March 22:

  • Aaron Hedenstrom writes: Thanks to Emilio Mesa for hosting the Jazz gig at Yogurt Fusion, 209 W Hickory St #101. Great group of players, fun to sit in and one of the most fun gigs I’ve had in a while! Check these guys out every Saturday at 7 p.m.! And treat yourself to some frozen yogurt while you’re there!

Sunday, March 23:

  • Bone Doggie’s Open Mic at the Abbey Underground, 100 Walnut St., 9 p.m. – FREE

Monday, March 24:

  • Spectrum (UNT Composers Forum) in Merrill Ellis Intermedia Theatre at 8 p.m. – FREE
  • Late Night Jazz with guitarist Kelyn Crapp at the Greenhouse Restaurant, 600 N. Locust, from 10 p.m. to midnight – no cover
  • Help Paul Slavens & Friends come up with “your” song (money does motivate them) at Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial, 10 p.m. – FREE

Tuesday, March 25:

  • A Taste of Herb – Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass Tribute Band, at Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial, at 5:00 pm – FREE. Followed by Denton Radio.Com Night at 8 p.m. – FREE
