First Tuesday round-up, more @ Banter Bistro

June 5, 2014

By Kathy Edwards McFarland

Stepping in to Banter Bistro Denton, 219 W. Oak St., last Tuesday (First Tuesday), we were met with the audacious, loud and proud Dixieland Jazz of Mr. Joe’s Jazz Band.

Mr. Joe's Jazz Band - Back, Left: Jeffry Eckels, Andy Cooper, Dr. Steve Prouty, Maristella Feustle, Jefferey Barnes. Front, Left: "Capt." David Hume, Mr. Joe Pinson and Thad Bonduris.

Mr. Joe (Pinson) is playing his trombone and singing, assisted by long time partner in crime “Captain” Dave Hume on trumpet, Jeffrey Barnes on clarinet, soprano and bass saxophones, Jeffry Eckels sitting in on upright bass, Dr. Steve Prouty on drums, Thad Bonduris on guitar and banjo, Maristella Feustle on guitar, and Andy Cooper on keyboard. Kicking it for an hour, the band regrouped for a two-hour set of Gypsy Jazz, as many of Mr. Joe’s musicians also play in Le Not So Hot Klub du Denton.

Staying in touch with the Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli repertoire, salted with jazz standards, the group serenaded a great crowd. All were excited to have Sophia Quebe (thanks, Drew Phelps) step up to the mic for “Blue Skies,” “I Love You for Sentimental Reasons,” and “These Foolish Things.”

One of the many improvements at Banter, now that the stage has been backed with curtains, is a quality sound system. The mixing board, worked by Bob Ralph, has added a welcome dimension to the venue’s acoustics.
