November 4, 2014

By Kathy Edwards McFarland

Yes, November 4 is here. Elections, local and statewide issues loom large. To decompress after a long, hard-fought campaign and as we await theVoted-Sticker-P2 outcome, let’s visit local venues and enjoy Live Jazz in Denton.

Tuesday, Nov. 4:

6:30 p.m. – University of North Texas Jazz Student Aaron Hedenstrom presents his DMA Recital in Composition, Arranging, Synthesizer and Vocoder in the Merrill Ellis Intermedia Theatre, UNT College of Music Building. Hedenstrom’s Electronic Suite No. 1 will feature Daniel Pardo, flute; Alex Fraile, alto saxophone; Jonathan Mones, alto saxophone; Horace Bray, electric guitar; and Brad Kang, electric guitar. Admission is free.

8 p.m. – UNT’s U-Tubes: Jazz Trombone Ensemble, directed by Julie Gray, in Kenton Hall, plays various works such as Wild – Muddy Waltzers, Powers – In Walked Kennedy, and Metheny/Mays (arr. Lundgren) – Minuano. Admission is free.

7 p.m. – String Theory Manouche plays the romantic and ethereal Fete Manouche (Gypsy Jazz) ala Staphane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt on the Sweetwater Grill & Tavern, 115 S. Elm St., patio stage, 7-9 p.m. This quartet, led by guitarist Kim Platko and featuring Mark Menikos, Violin; Dean Bouras, Guitar; and Marla Sporrer, Bass; performs a stunning array of finely crafted Gypsy Jazz favorites.

8 p.m. – Enjoy a cold brew, or glass of wine, along with something from Banter Bistro’s, 219 W. Oak St., unique menu! Mister Joe Jazz Band  (Dixieland Jazz) hits the stage at 8 p.m., Le Not-So-Hot Klub du Denton shifts gears with romantic Gypsy Jazz at 9:15.
